咸丰铸币,名目繁多、版式复杂,为中国历代铸币之最。“咸丰三年,军旅数起,饷需支绌,东南道路梗阻,滇铜不至,刑部尚书周祖培、大理寺卿恒春、御史蔡绍洛等先后条陈钱法,请改铸大钱,以充度支。”在这种情况之下咸丰大钱终于应运而生。 当时币值规定当五十及以下计值称为“咸丰重宝”,高于当五十计值称为“咸丰元宝 ”,以区别于小平钱“ 咸丰通宝”。清朝政府开铸的大钱有当十、二十、三十、四十、五十等。

咸丰三年(1853年)五月,咸丰帝令户部落实铸大钱,先铸当十钱一种。此币是圆形方孔铜质钱币,为难得一见的珍品古钱。正面铸有楷书“咸丰重宝”四字,从上而下而右而左直读。钱背上下写有汉文“当十”二字标明币值,左右用满文写有钱局的名称。钱币文字体深峻,结构端庄规整,铸造精美绝伦,其文字点划撇捺分明,线条有粗有细,粗若含雷霆万钧之力,细则如蛟龙游丝相连,从钱文中透露出一股抑扬顿挫的刚毅之劲,令人叹为观止。
